Volunteer for Dancin' on the Avenue 2010

This year will be Dancin' on the Avenue's 15th year, and the summertime repeat of musical fun along the Avenue for around 35,000 residents and guests. Along with the music, attendees will enjoy a variety of good food and beverages being served along the Avenue.

Volunteers make this festival successful — over 200 volunteers participate in this festival. Dancin' on the Avenue was voted by the readers of the Willow Glen Resident as the Best Community Event for 2008 — and we could not have done it without great volunteers. The funds that are raised from Dancin' on the Avenue are used to improve our Avenue. Check out the planters on Lincoln Avenue which have been re-done — this is a direct result of the funds raised from this festival.

We are asking company and community organizations to volunteer for beverage serving during the event. Working as a team with people you know makes it fun. Ideally groups can take responsibility for one or more beverage booths. Each beverage booth needs about 8 people. Your group could staff one booth or all four in a "pod." You may volunteer for Wine, Beer or Soda booths.

Volunteers serving beer or wine must be 21 years of age or older. All volunteers serving wine or beer would be provided with training. This is a wonderful way to meet your customers and promote your group or business to Willow Glen. Let's talk about the best way to promote your organization — the more booths you staff, the more exposure you'll get. Times are tough, so let's maximize your ability to promote yourself to the 35,000 attendees.

We also have volunteer opportunities for individuals such as:

  • Community Stage Emcee — will announce approximately 35 dance acts. Scripts will be provided.
  • Stage Manager - ensure that acts are ready to perform and queue them for performance
  • Back Stage Manager - keep performers aware of the schedule, obtain their music and get it to the Music Coordinator
  • Music Coordinator - loads CDs and queues music.
  • Host Position — Need assertive types — total of 4 — to manage a sector of festival to include a ticket booth, a security table, a beverage concession (includes 2 beer, 1 wine and 1 soda booths). Main duties are to assist with ticket and beverage lines so that street is not blocked; assure that ticket purchasers are getting wrist bands needed for alcohol beverages, report volunteer staffing issues to volunteer coordinator — and have fun! Equipment will be issued (vests, radios, etc.) Perfect position for retired police officers!
  • Beverage Booth Back-ups — we need volunteers to be ready to help serve in any of our soda/water, wine or beer booths if they are understaffed anytime during the festival.
  • Lost/Found, Information and First Aid Booth — two volunteers per shift -- 5pm to 7:30pm and 7:30pm to 10:00pm to provide general information and disperse first aid is requested. Collect lost items.
  • Survey — we need twenty volunteers to help us hand out and collect survey forms
  • Entrance & Exit — we need eight volunteers to help direct the crowd to either the entrance or exit at the festival gates

Please let us know if you plan to join us by either emailing cynthia@willowglen.org or calling our office at 408-298-2100.
